Side event

noun · updated Aug 2026

Definition

Side event is a side event is a gathering that runs alongside a main event but outside its official program — dinners, meetups, parties, workshops, or mini-conferences organized by sponsors, communities, or third parties who want access to the audience the main event assembled. Some are sanctioned by the organizer; many aren't.

Side events are the shadow economy of every major event. When a big show concentrates an industry in one city for a week, everyone with something to gain — vendors, VCs, communities, competitors — runs their own gatherings around it. At the largest tech and crypto events, side-event calendars now list hundreds of them, and for some attendees the official show becomes just the anchor for a week of satellite meetings. Organizers face a strategic choice about how to respond. Fight them and you'll lose — you can't police a city. Ignore them and they siphon your audience's best hours, and sometimes your sponsors' budgets, without you touching any of the value. The stronger play is usually to embrace and structure: publish an official side-event calendar, sell affiliation packages, offer venues and lead-scanning to sanctioned hosts, and protect your peak hours with must-attend official programming. Done well, a thriving side-event scene becomes proof of your event's gravity rather than a leak. The honest nuance: side events also expose your weaknesses. When attendees say the best conversations happened at a dinner someone else hosted, that's specific feedback about what your official format isn't providing — usually intimacy and curation. Read the side-event scene as market research, because that's what it is.
