Convention

The defining trait of a convention is that the audience exists before the event does. A medical society, a trade association, or a fan community already has members, and the convention is where that community physically assembles. That changes the organizer's job: you're serving an existing group rather than building an audience from scratch, which makes attendance more predictable but also more sensitive to how well the event reflects what members actually want. Governance is the part outsiders underestimate. Association-owned conventions typically answer to boards and committees, decisions move slower, and program choices can be political. Commercial organizers partnering with associations should budget real time for approvals. Destination rotation is another convention-specific dynamic — many rotate cities to share travel burden across the membership, which means venue sourcing restarts every cycle and local attendance swings with geography. The common mistake is assuming a captive audience means guaranteed turnout. Members still weigh the trip against cost and time, and younger members in particular won't attend out of loyalty alone. Conventions that keep growing treat every edition as something they have to earn, refreshing formats and giving first-timers a deliberate on-ramp instead of coasting on tradition.
