Leaderboard (events)

A leaderboard is the cheapest amplifier gamification has: the moment rankings are public, the top twenty players start competing with each other rather than just collecting points, and activity among that group multiplies. For organizers, that concentrated energy is useful — leaderboard chasers are the attendees who'll visit every sponsored activation and post in the feed — and the leaderboard itself is sellable as a sponsored moment ("the [sponsor] challenge, live on screens by hall two"). In practice, leaderboards need three operational decisions: reset cadence (a daily leaderboard keeps day-two arrivals in the game; an all-event board buries them), prize structure (rewarding only the top three means rank forty has no reason to keep playing — random draws among everyone above a threshold keep the middle engaged), and cheat handling. That last one isn't hypothetical: wherever points convert to prizes, someone will find the exploit — shared QR codes, repeated scans, bot-like tapping — and a visibly gamed leaderboard kills the game for everyone honest. The common mistake is having no fraud rules until the first dispute happens live at the prize desk. One honest nuance: public rankings show names, and some attendees don't want their activity visible to their competitors. Make leaderboard participation opt-in or pseudonymous, and you'll dodge the privacy complaint entirely.
