Event-qualified lead (EQL)
Event-qualified lead (EQL) is an event-qualified lead is a contact qualified through direct interaction at an event — a substantive booth conversation, a demo, or a meeting — rather than through digital behavior. The EQL label signals that a human has assessed fit and interest face-to-face, which usually makes it stronger than a standard MQL.
The EQL exists because event leads don't fit neatly into the usual MQL/SQL ladder. A ten-minute booth conversation where a prospect describes their project, budget range, and evaluation timeline carries far more signal than a whitepaper download, yet in many CRMs both land as generic MQLs and get the same automated drip. Creating an EQL stage — or at minimum an event-qualified tag — lets sales treat these leads with the urgency they deserve. To make the label mean something, define entry criteria before the show: for example, confirmed fit on two profile dimensions plus a stated need or timeline, recorded in the capture tool by whoever had the conversation. Then route EQLs differently: personal follow-up within 48 hours from the person they met, not a marketing sequence. The honest nuance is that EQL is not an industry-standard term — definitions vary, and some teams use it loosely to mean "any lead from an event," which defeats the purpose. If every badge scan is an EQL, the label is decoration. Keep the bar high and the volume low; a short list sales actually trusts and works beats a long one they ignore, every time.
