Deferred revenue (events)
Definition
Deferred revenue (events) is cash or invoices collected for booth or sponsorship contracts that accounting holds as a liability until performance obligations (usually the show) are met.
Deferred revenue is normal in event businesses with deposits months ahead of open. Ops and finance need shared visibility so cancellations and reductions unwind correctly. Train sales not to treat deferred cash as free budget.
