Category exclusivity
Category exclusivity is a sponsorship term guaranteeing that a sponsor will be the only brand from its product category at a given level: the sole payments sponsor, the only automotive partner. The sponsor pays a premium to lock competitors out of the sponsorship program, or parts of it, for the edition.
Exclusivity matters because for certain sponsors it's the whole point of the deal. A brand in a crowded category isn't just buying visibility at your show; it's buying the absence of its rival on the same sponsor wall, and it will pay disproportionately for that. Priced correctly, exclusivity is some of the highest-margin inventory you have, since it costs nothing to fulfill. The discipline is in the drafting. "Category" must be defined precisely, is a bank with a payments product inside "payments"?, and the scope must be explicit: exclusivity among sponsors only, or across exhibitors too? Event-wide, or within a tier? One edition, or multi-year? Vague language here produces the worst conversations in the business, usually on-site, with two angry sponsors and one contract that supports both of them. The common mistake is underpricing it: exclusivity's cost isn't fulfillment, it's every excluded deal you can no longer sign in that category, so price it against the category's total potential, not as a modest add-on. The honest nuance: exclusivity almost never extends to booth space, and it shouldn't; a trade show that excludes exhibitors by category stops being a marketplace. Make that boundary explicit in writing before the sponsor assumes otherwise.
